For years I spent weekends in the darkroom making black and white toned prints, sometimes slapping on tan-without-the-sun lotion so that, back in the office on Monday, I looked a little healthy. Three years ago the office and I parted company, unplanned, but a cloud with a silver lining. My work ethic still strong, I studied Photoshop 8 hours a day and enjoyed it so much I gave away my darkroom. I feel liberated by the endless possibilities that digital imaging gives, whether used only to 'correct' tonal/colour balance, or to create an image from my imagination. I don't miss the smell of the chemicals. I teach Photoshop
- darkroom skills are transferable and teaching ex-darkroom workers is
especially enjoyable. I constructed a
